I can also confirm on fully updated CentOS 5.4 + VMware Server 2.0.2 rpm, using @Charlie Brady's export line in /usr/sbin/vmware-hostd and @RevRagnarok 's steps seems to work. I can now access my VM's (and their consoles) without having to restart vmware-mgmt.
