AutoRecover only prompts when it was a previously SAVED version of a file. In Word2010 (I believe in 2007 as well), even if you have an UNSAVED document, and you have a computer failure (ie, power outage), there will still be a recovery file created, provided you have AutoRecover setup (see below).
