If it's games, you need USB 3.0 with 256GB. If it's media files, perhaps the file system on the flash drive is an unsupported one? Wait.. so the X1 no longer supports USB sticks for storing games and saves? I use it a lot on my 360. and since 128GB usb drives are cheaper now, I was hoping the console would support it.
