Dec 18, 2009 · Udev is the device manager for the Linux 2.6 kernel that creates/removes device nodes in the /dev directory dynamically. It is the successor of devfs and hotplug. It runs in userspace and the user can change device names using Udev rules. Udev depends on the sysfs file system which was introduced in the 2.5 kernel.Author: Unnikrishnan

udev - Wikipedia

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udisks
udev executes entirely in user space, as opposed to devfs's kernel space. One consequence is that udev moved the naming policy out of the kernel and can run arbitrary programs to compose a name for the device from the device's properties, before the node is created; there, the whole process is also interruptible and it runs with a lower priority.Developer(s): Greg Kroah-Hartman and Kay Sievers

12. UDEV rules for DVB — The Linux Kernel documentation

    https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/media/dvb-drivers/udev.html
Note. This documentation is outdated. Udev on modern distributions auto-detect the DVB devices. TODO: change this document to explain how to make DVB devices persistent, as, when a machine has multiple devices, they may be detected on different orders, which could cause apps that relies on the device numbers to fail.

udev and kernel show no events from usb devices - Unix ...

    https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/522160/udev-and-kernel-show-no-events-from-usb-devices
The problem begins when I want to support hot plugging, and thus need to use udev rules. So I ran udevadm monitor but it doesn't show any kernel or udev triggers when any USB device is plugged in. If I load a module I can then see the kernel/udev triggers for the USB device as the module loads.

Udev and firmware [LWN.net]

Oct 10, 2012 · The current udev developers thus seem unlikely to support putting udev in the kernel tree. Getting distributors to adopt the kernel's version of udev could also prove to be a challenge. In general, it is the sort of mess that is best avoided if at all possible.
