Ubuntu Precise, for example, has two kernels, pae and non-pae, and seems to choose the correct one. Can't the kernel detect this during runtime yet? Ubuntu, again, for later kernels seem to have dropped -pae from their kernels. I don't know if this means they've dropped pae support (which I doubt) or it is detected during runtime.

Jan 23, 2017 · Some processors need a non-pae kernel. The vast majority of Pentium M and Celeron M CPUs are suitable for fakepae or forcepae and can work with PAE kernels. But some of these processors need a non-pae kernel also for new versions of Lubuntu. There are also other 'not too old' CPUs that lack PAE capability: Transmeta Crusoe and VIA processors around 1 GHz.

Aug 17, 2018 · The problem is not missing PAE, it's about the processor not displaying its full capabilities. Pentium M's of the Dothan family display the PAE flag correctly and support the latest Buntus without modifications. The same distinction (Banias versus Dothan) goes for the lower performing Celeron M processors.

If you have hardware that doesn't support PAE, you're going to have to build your own kernel. No generic distro-config'd kernel is going to work for you. I'd suggest Gentoo, but given that you don't have PAE and given that PAE has been common since 1995, I can't imagine Gentoo would be pleasant on whatever hardware you're packing.

Sep 26, 2017 · Ubuntu currently packages the 3.8 kernel for optimal desktop speed and features. SMP. Some motherboards have more than one processor on them, and some processors have multiple cores. If your computer is like this, then the SMP kernel is for you. Non-SMP kernels will not be able to take advantage of your multiple processors.
