Aug 14, 2009 · I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and have successfully set up dual monitors with my Asus Eee PC and a 19 inch Dell monitor and everything works well enough (I had different wallpapers for each workspace prior to having dual monitors and that no longer works, neither does Desktop Wall, so if anyone knows a way to fix that, that would be great, but it’s not my main concern).

Join Displays: screen edges are joined so things can pass from one display to another. Mirror: the same content is shown on two displays, with the same resolution and orientation for both. Single Display: only one display is configured, effectively turning off the other one. For instance, an external monitor connected to a docked laptop with the lid closed would be the single configured display.

Ubuntu won't keep the display positions past a restart. There are a series of steps below to take you through creating a script that allows you to fix the positions of your multiple monitors and keep them past a restart or coming out of suspend : Delete your old monitors.xml file and create a new one using the Gnome display settings tool :
