    The problem had nothing to do with drivers. I'm leaving this question and answer here in case someone else searching for Intel H57 / DH57JG eSATA support finds it: Your board is supported by Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, no special drivers necessary.. In my case, it's a build quality issue with the desktop (not the first I've had with this machine, not very happy with the vendor).

    Under windows, I'm able to hotplug any ol' hard drive using my Thermaltake eSata USB Docking Station. As soon as I plug in the eSata cable, it spins up the drive and is recognized. Unfortunately, under Ubuntu it doesn't spin up at all. Under Ubuntu 14.04 I've added lsscsi, but I only end up with the following output:

BIOS sees the Fantom and i installed and ran ubuntu on it fine. So bios & another OS works. seems this is a problem with win7, maybe just 64bit. I'm seeing lots of problems all over google.
