May 19, 2004 · Just last night I was playing my Ralph Sweet flute in G. I think he calls it a folk fife. I was trying out the third octave. Got several notes surprisingly well in tune! Fingerings were mostly like a Bohm flute in the third octave. I got up to what on this flute is a B, and would be an F# on a D flute. For me that's real progress.

I remember reading somewhere that the tone of a flute is linked to whether the third octave is playable or not (when sounding an E in the first octave, you are also "sounding" the e in the 2nd, the b in the 2nd, the e’ in the 3rd, g’ in the 3rd etc).

I can play the first and second octave well. Anything higher than a top 3rd octave D is difficult to play, even after adjusting my embouchure.
