In the 1600s, Christiaan Huygens and Isaac Newton proposed competing theories for light's behavior. Huygens proposed a wave theory of light while Newton's was a "corpuscular" (particle) theory of light. Huygens's theory had some issues in matching observation and Newton's prestige helped lend support to his theory so, for over a century, Newton's theory was dominant.

SPH4U Wave Theory of Light LoRusso Poisson’s Bright Spot When Young put forth his arguments in support of the wave theory of light, the largely sceptical scientific community (most of who subscribed to particle theory) were unconvinced by his arguments and his work was not taken seriously. Newton’s influence was still too strong.

WAVE MOTION A wave is a pattern, or shape, or disturbance, traveling through a medium. Examples: Sound is a pressure wave in air. Sideways vibration of stretched string. Football stadium “wave”. As great as Newton was, his particle theory of light has failed. We must find a new model or theory. One other

Chapter 13: Light Theories. STUDY. PLAY. Who was the first person to conceive of an experiment to measure the speed of light? How? Galileo - He covered an uncovered lanterns to measure delay - It failed because light is too fast. In 1676, who was the first person to actually measure the speed of light…

But this came as a surprise, because before that we were sure that light was a wave. This previous theory was called the wave theory of light. We has some pretty solid evidence to support the wave ...

For light to move through space as either type of wave, it must have a medium to move through. This meant that Huygens’ theory, like all theories of light before it, relied on the idea that the universe is filled with Aristotle’s fifth element, the aether.

Aug 22, 2012 · The duality of light is mainly a concept, brought on by empirical evidence that suggested that light could behave and can much like both a wave and a particle. It began with the wave theory of light.

Wave–particle duality is the concept in quantum mechanics that every particle or quantum entity may be described as either a particle or a wave.It expresses the inability of the classical concepts "particle" or "wave" to fully describe the behaviour of quantum-scale objects. As Albert Einstein wrote:. It seems as though we must use sometimes the one theory and sometimes the other, while at ...
