Apr 29, 2009 · I don't turn my drive or PC on or off, but I'm not convinced disk activity has no correlation with disk failure. anyway, I have a seagate (no, not the new one with all the troubles) and it's rather loud so it's annoying. Plus it does this even while I'm playing HD movie, when I want to preserve as much CPU and disk bandwidth as possible.

At ATA-7 (from 2005), the IDLE IMMEDIATE command with UNLOAD FEATURE was added. However, it is optional and there was still no description of whether HDDs really need this to be shut down correctly.

The IDLE IMMEDIATE command allows the host to immediately place the device in the Idle mode. INTRQ may be asserted even though the device may not have fully transitioned to Idle mode (see Error! Reference source not found.). Unload Feature: The UNLOAD FEATURE of the IDLE IMMEDIATE command allows the host to immediately unload/park the heads.
