Jul 10, 2013 · as an IT admin I am also able to create folders, copy, save files etc without a problem. However, when this specific user running XP SP3 attempts to create a folder with spaces in the folder name, copy a file into a folder she gets "The destination does not support long file names.

When I try to copy or save a document to another folder, I get the message that the "destination does not support long file names". I've never seen this before, I can save the document some places with the long name but not others.

Sep 12, 2011 · We have run into similar problems before, it is not just the individual file name but the entire path that makes up the "long file name", so all the nested folders contributed to this length. Have you the user look at all the folder names along the path, some of them may need to be shortened with abbreviations, etc.

In the past the maximum supported file length was 260 characters (256 usable after the drive characters and termination character). In Windows 10 long file name support can be enabled which allows file names up to 32,767 characters (although you lose a few characters for mandatory characters that are part of the name).
