SWIG supports generating wrappers for PHP5. Support for PHP4 has been removed as of SWIG 1.3.37. The PHP developers are no longer making new PHP4 releases, and won't even be patching critical security issues after 2008-08-08, so it doesn't make much sense for SWIG to continue to support PHP4 at this point.

Support for PHP5 was removed in SWIG 4.0.0 and support for PHP4 was removed in SWIG 1.3.37. Currently any PHP7 release should work. In order to use this module, you will need to have a copy of the PHP include files to compile the SWIG generated files. If you installed PHP from a binary package, you may need to install a "php-dev" or "php-devel" package for these to be installed.

The PHP module was extensively rewritten in release 1.3.26, and support for generating OO wrappers for PHP5 was added in 1.3.30. Dec 09, 2015 · The distributions that will carry PHP 5 over EOL will also carry swig with php5 support, so I wouldn't worry so much. With my Debian PHP hat on, I am perfectly fine with swig dropping php5 support at the same as php 5.6 EOL (end of 2018).

May 25, 2016 · We use Swig to generate PHP and Python and other bindings for the two C++ libraries libkolab and libkolabxml. Swig appears to, not yet, support generating these bindings for PHP 7, however. The lovely people over at Ubuntu-building HQ must have considered this irrelevant, but it effectively renders Kolab or even just our Calendar and Tasks ...
Miklos made such great progress that we were able to merge this support into SWIG 1.3.40, which was released even before the Summer of Code finished. Miklos also spent some time working on improving SWIG's testsuite for PHP, and fixing bugs in the PHP support. Ashish Sharma spent the summer adding support for Objective-C as a new target language.
