This article series describes and illustrates the different types of support that prevents roof sagging and wall bulging at buildings, including definitions of collar ties, rafter ties, and structural ridge beams. Without the proper support of rafter ties or a structural ridge, a typical gable or sloped roof will sag downwards while pushing the building walls outwards towards a catastrophe.

Apr 25, 2019 · Todays inspection , single ridge beam that consisted of three pieces. Picture 1 shows double 2x4 supporting one seam with plywood sandwiching the 2 pieces - this is ok but near the other end was another ‘seam’ adjoining 2 pieces, which did not have any 2x4 support , only used plywood. There is a small hip part of the roof next to it near the Snapple bottle. I don’t see any bowing at this ...

Mar 23, 2012 · In cases like these we have used a vaulted flitch beam to support the ridge beam. The flitch beam is basically a 3/4"-1" thick steel plate with threaded rods welded to it that is then covered with wood framing. The steel plate would be CJP welded at the kink. I can't ever recall seeing a saltbox shed built with a ridge beam, or even a gambrel roof shed for that matter. Come to think of it, the only style shed I can see that would be easy to use a ridge beam is the gable style shed. Leave ridge beam for shed construction page.

May 31, 2001 · Re: Structural Ridge beam A structural ridge in affect, hangs the roof from the ridge. It however, requires adequate support at the ends. The structural ridge is designed for minimum sag. The walls of a house cannot be pushed out if the ridge doesn't sag. In fact the roof has a tendency to lean inward at the bottom when a structural ridge is used.

Nov 09, 2005 · TomW702 >> Yes, the 2x12s are being used as a ridge beam. The span of the ridge is 23 feet. I live in the pacific northwest, and we see snow yearly, but generally not a lot and not for very long. At most the roof would probably see 2 or 3 feet of snow, and that is a *very* rare occasion.

May 12, 2008 · The only reason a structural ridge beam would be needed is if there weren't any collar ties or ceiling joists to resist the outward pressure being put on the walls from the downward force of the roof acting in the rafters. You have collar ties that "should" be sized to resist that outward force, so in my opinion that beam is WAY overkill.
