May 20, 2013 · Hi, we've had 2 chimney breasts removed in a house we've just bought and are refurbishing. A friend of the family is a builder and has been for many years. Other family members have concerns that steel has not been used to support the chimney breasts above. Thick pieces of wood have been used, screwed into the walls and surrounding joists.

The first builder I spoke to said we would need a structural engineer to calculate how big a steel beam was needed to support the weight, and that we would need to have the work approved for Building Regs.

Been advised that we need a steel beam inserted, so called up a structural engineering company to assess the loft and chimney stack, take measurements and provide calculations and also asked for a general structural inspection.
