Let us calculate the maximum support span for transporting water through a seamless stainless steel pipe (ASTM A 312 TP 316 L) of 300 NPS through a distance of 15 km. Pressure in pipe is 20 bar at atmospheric temperature using the procedure described above. D = 0.3239 m [2] P = 20 bar S b = 34.53 MPa (30% of S a = 115.1 MPa) [4]

The locations of piping supports are dependent upon four factors: pipe size, piping configuration, locations of valves and fittings, and the structure available for support. Individual piping materials have independent considerations for span and placement of supports. Pipe size relates to the maximum allowable span between pipe supports.

For example, for copper tubing, support spacing varies from 8-ft for 1" tubing to 12-ft for 4". For PVC pipe the spacing depends on the pipe schedule and operating temperature. The span is 4-ft for %" pipe up to 6-ft for 4" schedule 40 pipe at ambient temperature; approximately 1-ft more for schedule 80, and half that spacing at 150°F.

Jun 28, 2005 · you don't mention if your installation is new or existing. If you are installing a new instr. air header on existing pipe support spacing i would consider the use of an intermediate support using a piece of ss angle iron and a u-bolt clamped to an adjacent line to help support the new ss line.
