This bug appears to have been fixed both in Debian and in the upstream squashfs-tools. It would be awesome if ONL could update the initrd to follow one of these. If needed, we can probably submit a pull request for this if somebody can point me at the right repository and branch to use as a starting point. Thanks! References:

It is only obligatory to compile SquashFS inside the kernel if you plan using squashed initial RAM disks (initrd). If you would like to use a squashed initial RAM disk, enable the "Initial RAM disk support" in the "Device drivets" section, "Block devices" subsection.
