Mar 09, 2009 · Sox is an open source project of SourceForge, which was built on the source code of Lame, another open source. Now it is quite interesting that Lame does have mp3 support but sox does not. But sox has more audio editing features than lame, which makes sox so useful. Now to enable mp3 support, we have to compile Sox with Lame and Libmad.3.4/5(11)

You can download the source RPM of sox and recompile with libmad and lame-devel libraries installed to add support for this feature. This tutorial should help, titled: INSTALLING SOX W/ MP3 SUPPORT ON CENTOS 5.X, though it's for CentOS 5.x it should still apply.

Now, I’m trying to put together a simple script to merge an MP3 playlist into a single MP3. Sox should do the trick … but it doesn’t come with built-in MP3 support (for obvious reasons). Here’s what I did to build MP3 support into Sox — many thanks to a good post by Michael Walma on the Ubuntu Forums.

SoX does not support wma. I started writing a plugin to allow it to support wma (using Windows' built-in WMA codec), but I haven't finished it yet, and it is possible that I might never finish it because I'm quite lazy. I suggest using ffmpeg.exe to convert WMA files to a format that SoX can read. Note: I don't recommend using the SoX ffmpeg ...

For CentOS you will need to recompile SOX (the base repo has the sox srpm) with the libmad and lame-devel libraries installed (rpmforge has those.) Once that is done, sox -h will list supported formats. When mp3 libraries are installed, sox -t wav -r 8000 -c 1 <wavfilename> -t mp3 <mp3filename>

SoX is a cross-platform (Windows, Linux, MacOS X, etc.) command line utility that can convert various formats of computer audio files in to other formats. It can also apply various effects to these sound files, and, as an added bonus, SoX can play and record audio files on most platforms.
