Nov 01, 2014 · I am not sure why, maybe this is because I've tried to downgrade binutils-2.21 ~amd64 to the stable version 2.20-r1 (and I've done it). I can not emerge enything now.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12501124/errors-in-compiling-linux-kernel-module-config-x86-x32-enabled-but-no-binutils
I'm not sure about nobjdump: not found, but it's possible to get CONFIG_X86_X32 enabled but no binutils support in some cases if the kernel source directory belongs to root and you're running as an unprivileged user. Try sudo make.. Another common cause of CONFIG_X86_X32 enabled but no binutils support is spaces in the compilation directory, but that's clearly not an issue in …

@Thomas It does provide an answer to the question. Driver compilation involves a necessary kernel header compilation step, which will fail with CONFIG_X86_X32 enabled but no binutils support if the user does not have the correct permissions. Answer was maybe a little terse, I'll edit to make that more obvious.

ubuntu manage package dependencies, so old binutils may depend on other old packages, so ubuntu won't let you do that. (i'm not very familiar to ubuntu package management system, maybe it provide such method, but i don't know) – afpro Aug 19 '13 at 1:10

Binutils, particularly the static linker does not have --sysroot support enabled. I need --sysroot support to in the static linker to further support things like being able to freeze the glibc ABI/API for applications (using a sysroot) while still possible rebasing the actually deployed glibc.

The GNU binutils are typically used in conjunction with compilers such as the GNU Compiler Collection (gcc), build tools like make, and the GNU Debugger (gdb). Through the use of the Binary File Descriptor library (libbfd), most tools support …Developer(s): GNU Project

It whitelists a few known warnings that should not cause a failure, and will fail the test for any other warning, even if the command completes successfully. The distcc warning above triggers this. This is why compiling without distcc succeeds (for me); without distcc, the warning line is not …

they are packages that provide kernel drivers & userspace tools for running Ubuntu in a VM on VMware. I know it implements at least part of the "VMWare tool set" that you try to compile, but I'm not sure it includes the "file sharing" part, and I have no vmware installation to test them right now. – JanC Nov 5 '11 at 19:50
