Mar 11, 2013 · The equivalent of TRIM is supported as SCSI unmap in Solaris 11.1 and ZFS will recognize that blocks are reclaimed. We have some challenges due to 15804599, which means SSD performance is severely impacted by SCSI unmap. The SCSI unmap is currently disabled due to this problem starting in S11.1 SRU 3.4.

An alternative method, which is arguably better, and works by tracking the metaslab allocator is also in progress and can be found here: Add UNMAP/TRIM functionality to ZFS and Illumos. There is a pull request for ZFS On Linux which implements FreeBSD's (Sep 2012) ZFS TRIM support.

Apr 13, 2018 · ZFS On Linux TRIM support has been a multi-year effort and it's exciting that the work may soon finally be accomplished. TRIM/UNMAP support has already been available in FreeBSD's ZFS code for several years but not yet in the other OpenZFS projects like ZFS On Linux.

By issuing UNMAP/TRIM commands for sectors which are no longer allocated the underlying device can often more efficiently manage itself.

Aug 12, 2017 · By sending UNMAP/TRIM commands, ZFS can notify the array that a particular block of storage is no longer required, which on most arrays will trigger the array to re-thin-provision that block of storage, freeing the space it was using. Unfortunately that’s where the good news ends.

Feb 05, 2014 · Thanks a lot for you answer. I found in 150400-07 that: "15613053 implement ATA TRIM, SCSI Write Same / UNMAP , Thin Reclamation", nothing about UFS/ZFS. How to enable TRIM/UNMAP feature for UFS-based Solaris 10? I want to test performance if this solution. Or is it totally impossible to enable TRIM for UFS?

TRIM and ZFS. So I've been trawling the internet for a couple of days looking for information on which versions support TRIM so far I've only found Solaris 11 and FreeBSD 9.2+. The illumos folks seem to be working on it but I can't find and roadmaps as to when it would be released.
