For free earth support method, the soils at the lower part of piling is incapable of inducing effective restraint so that it would not result in negative bending moments. In essence, the passive pressures in front of the sheet piles are insufficient to prevent lateral deflection and rotations at the lower end of piling.

Free-Earth Support Method (FES) The piling is driven just deep enough to assure stability, assuming that the maximum possible passive resistance is fully mobilized. The sheet piling is assumed to be inflexible and that no pivot point exists below the dredge line i.e., no passive resistance develops on the backside of the piling.

There are several methods of analyzing cantilever and anchored sheet-pile walls. Two of the early methods were (a) the free-earth support and the (b) fixed-earth support, as shown in Fig. 13-2 along with the simplified assumptions of active (from filled side) and passive pressure on the free …

Figure below shows the cantilever sheet pile being design using free earth support method. If the k a = 0.33, k p = 3 and FOS = 1.5, determine the effective depth, d for the sheet pile given. Worked example 1 :

Calculates the minimum sheet or soldier pile penetration required for cantilever, free earth support and fixed earth support. Also calculates the embedment required for a specified factor of safety, and models "no toe" designs. Factor of safety calculation (Net/Gross Pressure, Burland-Potts).
