When I start screen and run the script, I get 16 colors mapped to 256 colors - there are large blocks of solid color. When I run tput colors I get 256 (when term screen-256color is in my .screenrc). edit: I got it to work - I didn't configure screen with the --enable-colors256 option.

I have 256 colors working just fine in konsole,.I thought I'd give tmux a try because, unlike screen, it seems to support vi mode. However I find that the colors of my prompt show up and this is most likely because I have a 256 color mode prompt.

Configuring Screen. GNU screen, the wiliest of them all. Ubuntu was nice enough, around 2008 to enable 256 color support in screen, however, for some reason, does not ship with this option enabled. Update your .screenrc file and add the following:

If you run tmux -2, then tmux starts with 256-color support, even if it doesn't think that your terminal supports 256 colors (which is pretty common). By default, tmux advertises itself as screen without 256-color support. You can change the value of TERM in .tmux.conf to indicate 256-color support: set -g default-terminal "screen-256color"
