May 12, 2015 · To use the advanced features of Samba, it has to be compiled with ACL support (e. g. RHEL requires the libacl-devel to be installed, when compiling). Also you need a filesystem that supports the “user” and “system” xattr namespaces. It also needs to have ACL and XATTR support.

The fact that SAMBA tries to map the Windows ACL into an ACL on the hosts file system means that the host machine must also support ACLs. For ext3 and ext4 you can add the acl option when mounting the file system. However the default ACLs (more or less the abandoned draft POSIX.1e standard), do not map well to the ACLs of Windows.

Over the weekend, we updated out file server to Debian's kernel 2.6.18. We had previously never run a kernel with ACL support enabled. Since the upgrade, we are seeing very strange permission behavior. It appears to berelated to POSIX ACL support in Samba.
