Jan 06, 2009 · Ridge Board Support Dilemma. I have a "gable rafter roof" with a 4x4 holding up the ridge board at each end. The roof's ridge line is about 2 ft from the main load bearing wall that runs parallel to the ridge board. I went into the attic and found that the ridge board had been spliced. Approximately a 2x8 x 12' joined with a 2x8 x 9'.

The existing ridge board might serve as a ridge beam if adequate supports can be installed, such as a wall or closely-spaced columns. However, reinforcement of the existing ridge board (along with additional supports) may be necessary to form a ridge beam with adequate design capacity.

Aug 20, 2009 · The house is early 1800, log walls and chinking covered in vinyl. I'm looking for a way to support the ridge board on the house side, it runs smack in the middle of the chimney, also early 1800, soft brick. I'd rather not run a single post from slab to bottom of the ridge. Any ideas? Thanks, Chas Burke

RIDGE BOARD The engineering principles of the ridge board are a bit more complicated. Because the ridge board is a smaller member (typically only an inch thick, sometimes even less) it is not a structural member and doesn’t carry the gravity load. Its only job is to provide a connection point for the roof joists on each side of the roof.

Rafters and a ridge board are the key components of a roof-framing system. The rafters support the sides or slope of the roof. The ridge board forms the peak and ties the rafters together, side to side and end to end. Other elements, like gable studs and cross ties, supply additional bracing.Author: eHow

A ridge board does not support the rafters at the ridge. They are typically a nominal 1 inch board and are usually one size deeper than the rafter size (so that rafters cut on an angle will have full bearing on the board). Ideally the rafters should oppose each other directly but many authorities will allow the rafters to be offset by their width.

Oct 03, 2018 · As for the ridge board. The board carries no load, in fact a 1 x 8 would be fine as it only serves to hold the rafters in place and to space them on your 16 or 24 inch centers. A timber frame roof has rafters and a ridge beam, as with stick framing, but the ridge is a large structural beam that the rafters sit on top of or sometimes fit into notches cut into the beam. With this design, the ridge beam bears much more load (weight) than the ridge board on a standard stick-framed roof.
