May 19, 2010 · With RGBa, we can make a box transparent and leave its descendants alone: Declaring a fallback color. Not all browsers support RGBa, so if the design permits, you should declare a "fallback" color. This color will be most likely be solid (fully opaque). Not declaring a fallback means no color will be applied in browsers that don't support it.

In my view, the fact that SVG does not support RGBA directly (and gradients) is not the issue here, but that of being able to use d3's color scales for these kinds of colors. While rgba interpolation would be feasible in d3 (I think), I recognize that gradient interpolation is a hard to conceive thing. It wouldn't have to be supported though.

At first you must know that rgb() is cross-browser, but choosing transparency between rgba() and opacity() depend on your case, if you have a division with DOM tree children and you don't wanna make transparent its children better choose rgba() but if it's a lonely division I prefer use opacity().. Because browsers use Hardware Acceleration for rendering opacity().
