Building python without zlib is support is pretty unusual today and certainly not recommended. I agree that it is not worth adding more complexity to the Python configure script or Makefile to cover this edge case dependency in pip. There are other potential ensurepip failures, for instance if ssl support is missing.

I can confirm that the zlib python support is currently missing on OS X. It is very likely that it will be fixed in an upcoming version. /Marcus

In either case, it should use the system zlib; the included zlib will be used only on Windows, and on systems that don't have a system zlib. I certainly didn't include all files from zlib. If you think the specific one is missing, feel free to add it.
