Some sound systems, like the popular Logitech 5.1 systems for example, support multiple codecs like AAC, PCM, Dolby etc. AFAIK this codec didn't really catch on and was made less useful with the popularity of HDMI.

Aug 29, 2013 · The Apple TV does support AAC audio, but it will just transcode this and output 2ch PCM audio. 5.1 AC3 output is an option on Apple TV, but only if the video in question has a 2nd AC3 audio track. IIRC, these are the settings Handbrake will default to when using the Apple TV preset (2ch AAC, and 5.1 AC3 passthrough).
