PNG does not inherently support layers. So exporting a PNG would merge all of the layers into one. I would recommend PSD or TIFF as stated above because they support layers.

PNG does not have layers. Layers in Photoshop and I guess in Fireworks are proprietary formats that are kept internally until the file is saved and then usually flattened. Photoshop format saves layers as that is there own format.
