Old browsers like IE6 (which is now deprecated) don't support transparent PNG files, so it really depends on which browsers you plan to support. In general, PNG files are fine and will run on all major browsers. Unlike JPEGs, PNG is lossless and this may work against it at times when compressing.

Dec 29, 2013 · I’ve come up with a cross-browser solution which supports Firefox, chrome, safari, IE v9 and above. Thankfully IE v9 and above have support for basic SVG, masking and clipping. Thankfully IE v9 and above have support for basic SVG, masking and clipping.

According to W3Schools' Browser Stats, about 98.2% of browsers are IE 7+, FF, Chrome or Opera, which all support PNG format with transparency. So, not quite 99.9%, but pretty close. The stats say about 0.6% of uses have IE6, which suppports PNG without transparency (transparent PNGs in IE6 just have a solid white background).
