Jul 21, 2014 · I'm designing a pergola for my house and could use some insight on the size of beams required for safety and to eliminate sag. I'm planning to use 2x6 rafters spaced 16" OC. Due to the size of the existing concrete patio the 6X6 posts will be 14' apart on the long sides, and 8'on the other sides. What size beam do I need to span the 14' posts.

The smaller pergolas, given as examples in the free plans, are made by bolting the main rafters/beams onto the posts. Two beams can be used for extra support, one on each side of the post. For a substantially larger pergola, notch the top of the pergola posts, and sit the supporting beam on the notch for extra support.

Mar 08, 2010 · So I need to use a 36 foot beam but I am not sure how thick it needs to be. It will be carrying 4 x 8 x 16 rafters and 1 x 2 pine. Also the posts are already in place as we are tearing out the existing pergola with center post. They are 9" - 10" diameter pine set in concrete and with a concrete skirt 36" high.
