PCI-X, short for Peripheral Component Interconnect eXtended, is a computer bus and expansion card standard that enhances the 32-bit PCI local bus for higher bandwidth demanded mostly by servers and workstations. It uses a modified protocol to support higher clock speeds (up to 133 MHz), but is otherwise similar in electrical implementation. PCI-X 2.0 added speeds up to 533 MHz: 23, with a ...Created by: IBM, HP, and Compaq

Nov 18, 2009 · Originally the PCI bus was a 5-volt bus. Later, in PCI Revision 2.x, the PCI bus was a dual-voltage interconnect. In 3.0 this was changed to 3.3 volts only. The PCI-X bus is not compatible with the older 5-volt cards but newer 3.3-volt PCI cards will work in a PCI-X slot." So that's great news.

Aug 30, 2010 · PCI-X is generally backward-compatible with most cards based on the PCI 2.x[1] or later standard, meaning that a PCI card can be installed in a PCI-X slot, provided it has the correct voltage keying for the slot and (if inserting into a 32-bit slot) nothing obstructs the overhanging part of …

Jun 11, 2008 · Option#2: I see PCI-X to PCI-E adapters DO exist, but I can only assume that running a modern PCI-E x16 video card across this bus will ruin the computation potential right? Are the PCI-X slots on a riser card? I have some Dell PE2850 servers at work, dual socket P4's, that came with either PCI-X or PCIe riser cards.

PCI Express devices communicate via a logical connection called an interconnect or link.A link is a point-to-point communication channel between two PCI Express ports allowing both of them to send and receive ordinary PCI requests (configuration, I/O or memory read/write) and interrupts (INTx, MSI or MSI-X).At the physical level, a link is composed of one or more lanes.Created by: Intel, Dell, HP, IBM

Sep 27, 2011 · PCI is the older one, you can put these cards into PCI-X slots directly. PCI-E is what most video cards are, and all of EVGA's new vid cards use this format. PCI-X is the server version for huuuuuge data transfer rates and such and can take PCI cards but these cards cannot fit in PCI slots. so you could get an adapter

The PCIXCAP pin is an additional ground on conventional PCI buses and cards. If all cards and the motherboard support the PCI-X protocol, a pull-up resistor on the motherboard raises this signal high and PCI-X operation is enabled. The pin is still connected to ground via coupling capacitors on each card to preserve its AC shielding function.Created by: Intel
