This is an important announcement for any Oracle customers who must run on a fully-supported release of their Oracle database. While Oracle offers a limited "extended support" plan, Oracle9i is still desupported for any new bug fixes as of July 31, 2007.

Jan 27, 2017 · First, the extended support fee for 11.2.0.4 has been waived for another 18 months, taking it to the end of 2018 (start of 2019). This is really big for us as we have some projects which are gradually dying as we move to Oracle Cloud Apps and we don’t want to spend time upgrading them. This is going to save some money!

It’s not officially supported by Oracle Premier Support anymore, and a small handful have purchased the Extended Support option for it. For whatever reason, there was a lot of angst around upgrading to the latest release this time around.
