OpenSSH has a possibility to read public key from a smart card and let it do operations with a private key without exposing the key itself. This means that the private key doesn't leave the card. A smart card is handled by a shared library, which you need to provide to the `ssh command, so the client will know how to communicate with the card.

I am attempting to ssh onto a CentOS 7.5 machine (192.168.1.5) via smart card technology. Now I can SSH using the master slot's x509 certificate with the matching private key to accomplish this, but this means that I must put the certificate's public key onto every machine that I wish to SSH onto.

Typically, OpenSSH uses the ssh-agent application to handle authentication. gpg-agent has been designed to speak the same protocol as ssh-agent though (when enabled). If you stop the ssh-agent process, and add “enable-ssh-support” to ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf then the OpenSSH client should start talking to gpg-agent instead.
