Installing OpenFiler on a USB stick allows you to seperate your NAS system and config from the data. You don’t have to waste a seperate disc for this purpose. Furthermore, a Flash memory is less sensitive for ‘crashes’ than hard discs. Certainly in my case, where I needed alot of storage space but the data on it was not really crucial.

ISCSI initiator on a client is from Microsoft and it is used for conecting to the tape drive. It can be used also third party software for initiator. Backup started on Windows standalone machine (ntbackup, SQL Ent. Manager) and done on the tape drive. I've tried to use OpenFiler and Fedora as guest with iSCSI target support.

May 23, 2013 · It doesn't need a SCSI command set since it's not SCSI; and if you wanted to use it for virtual tape, just stick a gateway in-front of it (a somewhat convoluted indirection, but feasible nonetheless). It's got built-in host locking support so you can stick any cluster filesystem on top of it (e.g. VMFS, GPFS, GFS et al).
