Let me be clear about what I’m suggesting here: I think opener should raise partner’s major suit response holding three card support unless he has exactly 3-3-3-4 shape – i.e. whenever he holds a ruffing value in a side suit. Let me illustrate with a few examples:

There is expert debate on whether 3-card limit raises are acceptable opposite a 1 / opening bid. This practice may occur if 1) playing a 5-card major system, and 2) holding 3-card support with unbalanced shape. Opener can pass a limit raise with minimum values, or bid on with more.

Differentiating 3-card and 4-card Support Many players/systems differentiate a limit major raise with 3-card support versus a limit raise with 4-card support. The question is, why would you want to do this? Suppose responder shows a limit major raise. With extra values, opener goes on to game; with a minimum, opener does not go to game.

Jan 08, 2012 · (4) With a 6-card minor and min, I will raise on three any time I think a 4-3 major fit will be better than a 6-1 minor fit. This is usually, but not on a very robust suit. (5) With a balanced minimum, I will not raise with 4333 shape, but will otherwise usually raise unless my hand seems very "notrumpy" (i.e. lots of slow cards, scattered values).

Thus more advanced players change their stronger responses to discriminate between having 3 or 4+ card support. This means a limit raise, the raise of the major to three, requires at least four trump.

It is not necessary, as it is Opener's responsibility to give delayed support when he holds 3-card support. But Responder may jump rebid his 6-card suit . In all other cases where Responder holds a 5-card major, he should find a second bid in another suit or bid 2NT , to give Opener the opportunity to show delayed support .
