Dec 19, 2004 · Dear All I have just installed pptp client on Mandrake 10.1 Official following the instruction given at pptp client's site. However, when I try to connect to a VPN server, I get the following message in the log: MPPE required, but kernel has no support.
http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-diagnosis.phtml
Diagnosis: either the kernel has no MPPE support, or this version of pppd is incompatible with the MPPE kernel module version you used. The most likely cause is using PPP 2.4.2 or later on a kernel that has an MPPE module built for PPP-MPPE 2.4.0 or 2.4.1. For a bit more history on this, see also Why are the pppd options different?

Jun 08, 2006 · In the case above, the local pppd has proposed stateless 128-bit encryption and compression, but the peer has requested stateless 40-bit encryption and no compression. The local pppd was built without 40-bit MPPE support, or 40-bit MPPE was disabled, and so it …

Install the pptp, kmod-mppe and kmod-crypto package: ipkg install pptp kmod-mppe kmod-crypto. While the pptp package is installed already if you are using the White Russian RC5 pptp build of OpenWrt, you still need to install kmod-mppe and kmod-crypto for encryption and compression support.

The kernel module kmod-mppe is needed for encryption. If you are on trunk, you might need to update your firmware to latest before installing kernel modules, as the kernel sometimes changes, thus the trunk repository modules will not match the older kernel.
