If only one memory module is installed, it must be installed in socket DIMM1_A. ... (4 total ranks) will give you better performance than 2 2GB single rank DIMMs (2 total ranks). The chipset will support up to 8 total ranks . Think of it like spindles in RAID. However, dual ranked DIMMs are less expensive, so your choice is either best ...

A single-rank DIMM has one set of memory chips that is accessed while writing to or reading from the memory. A dual-rank DIMM is similar to having two single-rank DIMMs on the same module, with only one rank accessible at a time. A quad-rank DIMM is, effectively, two dual-rank DIMMs on the same module. Only one rank is accessible at a time.

bhamill, This system only supports 4 dual ranked Dimms - and if you do put 4 of these dimms into slots 1A/B and 2A/B then you cannot populate slots 3A/B. Slots 3A/B will not accept dual rank dimms. You can have 2 dual ranked dimms and 4 single rank dimms. M@l

I'm trying to upgrade a Dell 2850 GII from 8 to 12GB RAM. The MoBo allows up to 16GB and currently has 4-2GB sticks of PC2-3200R in slots 1 A&B and 2 A&B. When I insert two more of the same memory, I get the message that slots 3 A&B only support single rank DIMMs, and I should remove the dual rank DIMMs.

The term rank was created and defined by JEDEC, the memory industry standards group. On a DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 memory module, each rank has a 64-bit-wide data bus (72 bits wide on DIMMs that support ECC). The number of physical DRAMs depends on their individual widths.

The dual channel basically means it can talk to both DIMMs, at the same time, at full speed. Using only single channel effectively halves your potential bandwidth because only 1 interconnect is active and it can only talk to 1 DIMM. "Rank" refers to how the memory chips on the stick are addressed by …
