Force Octave to assume the file is in HDF5 format. ( HDF5 is a free, portable binary format developed by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois.) Note that Octave can read HDF5 files not created by itself, but may skip some datasets in formats that it cannot support.

I'm trying to build hdf5 support in Octave, building 4.4.1 from source. The documentation says hdf5 support is enabled by default, without being specific as to whether that support exists only in the form of the octave load -hdf5 and save -hdf5 commands. Meanwhile, hdf5oct package promises implementations of h5create and h5write.

The HDF5 support in Octave <= 4.0 is only intended for files which were written by Octave itself, via Simple File IO functions. It has many disadvantages if your data comes from elsewhere, like it is not possible to read a single arbitrary dataset, or a part of it.
