Configuring NPIV support. This section provides the steps to configure NPIV support for VMware. About this task NPIV is an extension to the Fibre Channel industry standard. In a server virtualization environment, NPIV allows each VM to have a unique Fibre Channel World Wide Name (WWN), enabling multiple virtual machines to share a single physical HBA and switch port.

NPIV supports vMotion. When you use vMotion to migrate a virtual machine it retains the assigned WWN. If you migrate an NPIV-enabled virtual machine to a host that does not support NPIV, VMkernel reverts to using a physical HBA to route the I/O.

Nov 15, 2011 · NPIV stands for N-Port ID Virtualization. It is an ANSI T11 standard that describes how a single Fibre Channel Physical HBA port can register with a fabric using several worldwide port names (WWPNs), what might be considered Virtual WWNs. This in turn means that since there a multiple Virtual HBAs per physical HBA,...

N-port ID virtualization (NPIV) provides the ability to share a single physical Fibre Channel HBA port among multiple virtual ports, each with unique identifiers. This capability lets you control virtual machine access to LUNs on a per-virtual machine basis.

NPIV is supported only for virtual machines with RDM disks. Virtual machines with regular virtual disks continue to use the WWNs of the host’s physical HBAs. The physical HBAs on the ESXi host must have access to a LUN using its WWNs in order for any virtual machines on that host to have access to that LUN using their NPIV WWNs. Ensure that access is provided to both the host and the virtual machines.

If you plan to enable NPIV on your virtual machines, you should be aware of certain requirements. The following requirements exist: ■. NPIV can be used only for virtual machines with RDM disks. Virtual machines with regular virtual disks use the WWNs of the host’s physical HBAs. ■. HBAs on your host must support NPIV.

NPIV is the ability for a VM to use it's OWN storage separate from the host, so it can be provisioned isolated from the host. I was saying that if you have shared storage, you can simply attach storage to a VM, and not configure the VM, click on NPIV, and attach the storage directly to the VM. That's my point.

The physical HBAs on the ESXi host must support NPIV. If the physical HBAs do not support NPIV, the virtual machines running on that host will fall back to using the WWNs of the host’s physical HBAs for LUN access. Each virtual machine can have up to 4 virtual ports.

Jul 26, 2013 · -for npiv virtual wwn need to be added in the zone where phyical wwn has been added -storage side you need to register the wwn (now a days it auto register) and need to bind with vm name and ip. -in storage group side you need to map as connect host.

For this implementation of NPIV, the physical HBAs on an ESX Server host, using their own WWNs, must have access to all LUNs that are to be accessed by virtual machines running on that host. The ESX Server host’s physical HBAs must support NPIV.

Likewise, VMware hasn’t put much effort into improving NPIV support in vSphere or promoting its use. One might contemplate, which is the cause and which is the effect.
