N-Port ID (NPIV) Virtualization Support on AIX with SF HA 5.1 Solution. NPIV and the IBM Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) NPIVOverview: N_PortID Virtualization (NPIV) is a fibre channel industry standard method forvirtualizing a physical fibre channel port. NPIV allows one F_Port to beassociated with multiple N_Port IDs, so a physical fibre channel ...

To enable NPIV on the managed system, you must create a Virtual I/O Server logical partition (version 2.1, or later) that provides virtual resources to client logical partitions. You assign the physical fibre channel adapters (that support NPIV) to the Virtual I/O Server logical partition.

IBM PowerHA SystemMirror V6.1 Enterprise Edition (EE) adds Support for IBM PowerVM V2.1 (VIOS), including NPIV, to the EMC Symmetrix V-Max SRDF July 30, 2010 IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for AIX* Enterprise Edition (formerly HACMP*) V6.1 for AIX V5.3 and V6.1 adds support for IBM PowerVM V2.1 (VIOS), including NPIV, to the EMC Symmetrix V-Max/SRDF.

The biggest disadvantage (that I can see) to using NPIV is the fact that you must install any necessary MPIO device drivers and/or host attachment kits on any and all of the client LPARs. This means that if you have 100 AIX LPARs that all use NPIV and connect to IBM DS8300 disk, you must install and maintain SDDPCM on all 100 LPARs.
