Notching a post does not weaken the structural integrity of the wood support post because the load for the deck is transferred down through the post to the footings. The upright notched section of the post acts stabilizes the beam. Most deck builders use a reciprocating saw to cut an L shaped seat in the top of the post large enough to hold the beam.

EXAMPLE 6.20 Notched Beam Determine if a 6 18 rough-sawn beam with notched supports is adequate, considering shear only, to support the given loads. The notches are 4-in. deep and sufficiently long to provide adequate bearing length at the support. The notch does not extend past the face of the support.

Jul 28, 2015 · Re: Notch or not to Notch Column to Support Beam with Overhead Pergola? We notch the 6x6 post all the time for these situations. HOWEVER since our steel frame system uses smaller material we are only notching 2" for our beam instead of 3" so we have more meat left in our column. We also use rough 6x6 so it's a true 6"+.

No notches are allowed in the top of a large beam (greater than 4 in. thick), except at the ends. To avoid bouncy or sagging floors, follow this guide. If joists have been overly notched or drilled, you can usually correct the problem with plywood or steel reinforcement.

Notching a post to recess a deck beam is usually not much of a concern, unless the post continues on to carry a roof or another deck above. Even then, provided the post is well connected to the deck against horizontal forces, and the notched portion bears tightly against the framing at the top and bottom, there's probably little concern.

notching of LVL beams on the tension side results in decreased strength caused by stress concentrations that develop around the notch and a reduction of the net cross section resisting the bending and shear forces.
