The majority of the gait cycle is spent in single leg support during which the BOS is minimized to the width of the supporting foot. Thus, when a patient is tried for gait, the wider base of support by means of walking aids such as walker, crutches, cane, etc is provided to acquire more stability.

Feb 01, 2002 · A wide base of support (BOS) has long been believed to be a hallmark of unsteady gait.1–5 Although static standing stability increases with increases in BOS, such as in tandem versus 30-cm BOS standing,6 no reports to date have described BOS during gait and its relationship to dynamic stability, as determined by 3-dimensional kinematics during gait analysis.Cited by: 77

the frontal plane during walking is a function of lateral foot placement (MacKinnon and Winter, 1993). This foot placement dictates the base of support (BOS) during the stance phases of the gait cycle. Step or stride width, which is reflective of the limits of the BOS in the frontal plane during walking depends on several factors including

Jun 27, 2016 · This is good if you are walking on ice, but that is about it. This is an epidemic, hence the prevalence of cross over gait out in the world. Increasing balance ability will help to increase base of support and hence help with reducing cross over gait (narrow step width gait and running) tendencies. Obesity seems to make this worse.
