Cairo doesn't require X11 headers. I successfully built Cairo without X11 headers. The issue is that, for some reason, R is requiring Cairo to have been built with Xlib support, despite the --with-x=no flag to configure. – rmccloskey Oct 8 '14 at 19:20

X11, from the reference implementation to Xorg 6.9, uses its own "imake" build system. The clients, server, and libraries are in one build tree. Certain formula like i3 require cairo to be built with xcb, only when the cairo formula depends_on :x11 does ./configure find the necessary files to build cairo with xcb support. Description of problem: I am packaging window manager awesome (see bug 452427), which needs XCB support in Cairo.ATM the support is turned off (it's claimed to be beta feature). Please, consider enabling XCB, in case it's beta-nature might influence (in bad manner) only apps using XCB features of Cairo.
