Many newer chipsets support the Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI), which allows operating systems to universally control them and enable NCQ. DragonFly BSD has supported AHCI with NCQ since 2.3 in 2009. Newer mainstream Linux kernels support AHCI natively, and FreeBSD fully supports AHCI since version 8.0.

I would like to reproduce this scenario on my Linux PC, but the Linux AHCI driver has NCQ enabled by default. I need to disable NCQ, so I found this website describing how to disable NCQ, but it doesn't work. The Linux PC still reaches 190 MiB/s write performance.

NCQ support added in later chipsets. Looks like a PATA controller, but with full SATA control including hotplug and PM. Update: NVIDIA has provided information (under NDA) that permits implementation of NCQ support, and a sample Linux implementation (patch) as well.

Apr 14, 2015 · While usually not presenting any major features each release cycle, the libata feature pull request for Linux 4.1 is a bit more interesting this time around. Catching my interest from the libata 4.1-rc1 pull request by Tejun Heo is the addition of NCQ Autosense support.

AHCI has two main benefits: support for hot pluggable SATA drives (mimicking USB drives' behavior) and Native Command Queuing (NCQ). It has been present in the Linux kernel since version 2.6.19 and will be loaded automatically in current Arch kernel.
