Oct 24, 2015 · Is booting Windows 10 from a vhd (or vhdx) file officially supported by Microsoft? I know there were lots of articles about running the Windows 10 technical preview by using Boot From VHD, but I have been unable to find a listing of Windows 10 features that shows that it officially supports this feature.

Jun 13, 2018 · The following lists support for moving a native boot VHD file. You cannot move a native boot VHD to another physical machine unless you run sysprep.exe with the generalize switch. You cannot move a native boot VHD to a virtual server such as Hyper-V without running sysprep.exe with the generalize switch.

Jan 14, 2017 · Another option is to leave P2V VHD stored on host, any drive that allows it to expand to its full capacity; Windows on native boot VHD has access to host drives so a VM could be set up with P2V VHD as existing VHD stored on another computer, in this case on host. Of course this is not practical.

Jul 26, 2017 · The VHD header and footer both use 64bit fields to describe element sizes. This 2TB myth probably came from the fact that 2TB is the maximum size disk that can be handled by a legacy BIOS (e.g. like an XP VM uses). So an "XP Mode" VM would have been limited to 2TB disks, but because it was MBR and XP, not because it used VHD format.

Is it possible to native boot a vhd created from an image of an existing and working Windows 10 (April Update) installation (native PC, not VM, and no Sysprep), using UEFI or BIOS interchangeably on the same machine the installation was first setup (Since it's the same device, I was hoping Sysprep wouldn't be required)?
