Jul 21, 2010 · If I put back SATA native mode I see Win7 as a subset of GRUB which will not load as described above. Win7 is on the 1st ATA drive with XP and Ubuntu on the 3rd drive in separate partitions. I expected Win7 to better support Native SATA mode and was surprised that changing the BIOS back to Legacy allowed Win7 to install.

The entire SATA controller and the virtual disks attached to it, including those in IDE compatibility mode, will not be seen by OSes that do not have device support for AHCI. In particular, there is no support for AHCI in Windows before Windows Vista. So Windows XP, even SP3, will not see such disks unless you install additional drivers.

In general, a hard drive performs more slowly in IDE mode. IDE mode provides better compatibility with some older hardware. If you want to install only one hard drive and do not wish to use the advanced SATA (AHCI) features (such as hot swapping and Native Command Queuing), select IDE mode when installing a hard drive.

And also, I cannot install the intel matrix storage manager without enabling the Sata native support, and so how important is the intel matric manager and do I really need to install it?

Aug 25, 2015 · I have been wondering here as I was in the bios setup on one of the two desktops where a pair well actually a mix of a single Sata II drive being the original for the single drive case as well as a larger Sata 3 drive just added in are presently running on the Native IDE setting there.
