Apr 17, 2007 · Multiple Spanning Tree (MST) is an IEEE standard inspired from the Cisco proprietary Multiple Instances Spanning Tree Protocol (MISTP) implementation. This document assumes that the reader is familiar with Rapid STP (RSTP) (802.1w), as MST heavily relies on this other IEEE standard. This table shows the support for MST in various Catalyst switches:

Objective. Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a network protocol that ensures a loop-free topology for a bridged Local Area Network (LAN). Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) is a protocol that creates multiple spanning trees (instances) for each Virtual LAN (VLAN) on a single physical network.

MST is commonly used in extremely large networks where running PVST would tax switch resources. Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol gives you the ability to configure a hierarchical spanning tree topology where you have a common spanning tree instance known as the (CIST), technically instance 0 in MST Configuration mode.

Hi Michael, IST0 is called IST (Internal Spanning-Tree) and these are the VLANs that haven’t been mapped to another instance. PVST uses 1 STP for each VLAN, MST uses 1 STP for multiple VLANs so we have a mismatch here.

Mar 10, 2018 · Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) was first specified in IEEE 802.1s and is standardized in IEEE 802.1Q. MSTP enables multiple VLANs to be mapped to the same spanning-tree instance, reducing the number of spanning-tree instances needed to support a large number of VLANs.

The Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP), originally defined in IEEE 802.1s and later merged into IEEE 802.1Q-2005, defines an extension to RSTP to further develop the usefulness of virtual LANs (VLANs). In the standard a spanning tree that maps one or more VLANs is called multiple spanning tree (MST). If MSTP is implemented a spanning tree ...

The Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) and algorithm, provides both simple and full connectivity assigned to any given Virtual LAN (VLAN) throughout a Bridged Local Area Network. MSTP uses BPDUs to exchange information between spanning-tree compatible devices, to prevent loops in each MSTI (Multiple Spanning Tree Instances) and in the CIST (Common and Internal Spanning Tree), by …
