The 62.5/125 µm (AKA: OM1) has been the most popular multimode fiber choice throughout the 80's, 90's and into the early 2000's and was the most common multimode fiber used and yet it has the lowest data carrying capacity and shortest distance limitations as compared with other Multimode fiber types.

May 12, 2016 · Multimode fiber is typically used for short distance transmission. But the maximum reaches are varied in different multimode fiber types. Also, on account of different data rates, the transmitting distances are different. However, the common feature is that OM1 always supports the shortest distance yet OM4 supports the longest.

Apr 04, 2008 · Multimode fiber simply refers to the fact that numerous modes or light rays are carried simultaneously through the waveguide. One key characteristic of a multimode fiber is its modal bandwidth. It represents the capacity of a fiber to transmit a certain amount of information over a certain distance and is expressed in MHz*km.

Aug 01, 2001 · There are two basic types of transmitters that work with multimode fiber: 850nm LED and 1300 nm Laser. Supported speeds can range from 16Mbs token ring to 10Gbs Ethernet. Also, keep in mind that each connection point can add 100-300 meters of logical distance to your maximum length calculation. So, there really isn?t just one answer.

Identified by ISO 11801 standard, multimode fiber optic cables can be classified into OM1 fiber, OM2 fiber, OM3 fiber, OM4 fiber and newly released OM5 fiber. The next part will compare these fibers from the side of core size, bandwidth, data rate, distance, color and optical source in details.

Aug 27, 2011 · Cable type is either multimode or single mode. With multimode, you can have different core sizes. OM1 fiber is usually 62.5 micron, OM2 fiber is usually 50 micron and OM3 is lazer enhanced 50 micon. Depending on the model bandwidth of the fiber and the transciever that will tell you your fiber distance limitation.
