Dec 20, 2011 · Regretfully, the MPLAB X team has concluded that MPLAB X cannot viably support MPLAB-ICD2. MPLAB-ICD2 was introduced over 10 years ago, long before a platform independent USB solutions existed. It was replaced by MPLAB ICD3 over 5 years ago and lower cost tools, such as PICKIT 3 were also introduced at that time.

Oct 23, 2019 · MPLAB X IDE uses Microsoft's generic WinUSB driver while MPLAB 8 and earlier uses a set of proprietary drivers. As such, if you wish to use both versions of MPLAB on the same system (for example, to support legacy code in its original environment), you will have to switch USB drivers each time you move between MPLAB versions.

At this point, follow the EXACT MPLAB documentation to install the first driver. I had to run the "Update Installation and & Clean" procedure from \Microchip\MPLAB IDE\Utilities\MPUsbClean\MPUsbDocs\Update_Clean.htm and both update, then pre-install the driver before disconnecting and re-connecting the ICD2.
