The motherboard has to also support hardware virtualization. Unfortunately the motherboard manufacturers don’t seem to make it really easy to determine whether or not their motherboard supports Hardware Virtualization. You can check the box or description and see if it lists AMD-V or VT-x, which they may or may not list.

As you can see, VMware seems to not like the default configuration of the AMD Ryzen. For those wondering, we did try both UEFI and standard BIOS booting, as well as switching the installation media to a USB key with the same result, the dreaded VMware ESXi Pink Screen of Death.
