The meta referrer tag works with most browsers to pass referrer information in a manner defined by the user. Traffic remains encrypted and all the benefits of using HTTPS remain in place, but now you can pass referrer data to all websites, even those that use HTTP.

Google has foreseen this issue years ago, in 2012 they added Meta Referral Tag for browsers with the appropriate support. As of mid-2014, this meta[@name="referrer"] is just a proposed functionality for HTML5, and it doesn't appear to have been implemented in Gecko, for example -- only Chrome and Safari are claimed to support it.
